Operate at peak performance
If you take care of your forklift, it will take care of you. Following these simple tips will help increase engine life and maintain engine performance.
Perform pre-shift or daily inspections.
Checking the engine fluids, as well as additional related items as described in the forklift's Operation and Maintenance Manual, is your first vital step in longer engine life.
Establish and adhere to a Planned Maintenance (PM) program.
A good PM program will follow the engine maintenance schedule provided by the manufacturer. The PM should include replacing the engine oil and filter.
An engine oil analysis program is also beneficial. It can help provide a detailed breakdown of the materials that are in the oil. Abnormally high amounts of different metals or silica content indicate there may be a failed component in the engine. It could also mean the engine is ingesting dirty air. By investigating these concerns early, you can help reduce repair costs and increase the engine's life.
Inspect and change the air filter.
Weak engine performance and poor fuel economy can occur if you neglect the periodic inspection and/or replacement of the air filter. A restricted air filter can allow dirty, unfiltered air to be pulled into the engine, dramatically reducing engine life.
Check the cooling system.
This system can also affect the life and performance of an engine. An engine is designed to operate within a specific temperature range. When that's exceeded, damage to internal components may occur. Maintenance should include changing the coolant, too. Failure to do so can result in damaged engine parts, especially aluminum items.
Arrange for a tune-up.
During a tune-up, the fuel and ignition system will be inspected and adjusted if required. Remember, if your forklift's engine is a new one, meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) regulations for emissions, fuel system and emission-control system are required to be tamperproof. That means you no longer need to (or should) check and adjust engine components already set for optimum efficiency. But if you have a concern, our dealers are trained in how to diagnose and repair EPA-compliant forklift engines.
Use OEM or Promatch® parts.
An easy way to improve engine life and maintain performance is to make sure that Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or Promatch parts are used. While "will-fit" parts may physically look the same as what you're replacing, the manufacturer's design specifications and tolerances may not be identical. Be sure to ask for genuine Mitsubishi forklift truck or Promatch parts for other brands.
Let us help.
You could be fined thousands of dollars per engine if an untrained mechanic at your company disables or modifies any emissions controls on a forklift engine built and sold after Jan. 1, 2004. The EPA also requires you to keep detailed records of work performed and parts used.
Your dealer can perform your engine PMs on a regular basis and keep all records for you. To learn more, contact your local service department.
Remember that we are not here simply to make sure you select the right Mitsubishi forklift truck to purchase - we are in this to support you for the long haul. Contact your local dealer for questions about service options and maintenance programs to keep your forklift running strong. |
